Welcome to the captivating Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple, a stunning architectural gem nestled at 11022 S 4000 W in South Jordan, Utah. This beautiful temple is not only a spiritual sanctuary but also a testament to modern craftsmanship and design.
The journey of the Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple began with its announcement on October 1, 2005. A momentous groundbreaking and site dedication took place on December 16, 2006, led by the revered Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. Fast forward to 2009, when the temple opened its doors to the public for the first time from June 1st to August 1st, allowing visitors to marvel at its beauty before the historic dedication, which occurred from August 21st to 23rd, officiated by Prophet Thomas S. Monson.
This magnificent structure spans 60,000 square feet and is elegantly situated on 11 acres of land, reaching a height of 183 feet and sitting at an elevation of 4,783 feet. The exterior, adorned with Uinta Gold Granite from China and complemented by exquisite Wyndam Grey Granite pavers, captures the eye and the heart. A striking feature of the temple is its single attached end spire, crowned by a gold leafed statue of the angel Moroni, which symbolizes divine guidance.
The interior is equally breathtaking, showcasing light limestone from Morocco and darker limestone from Egypt, creating a serene and welcoming atmosphere. The intricate woodwork, made from Rift-cut White Oak and cleverly mixed with veneers of White Oak and Sycamore from the German Alps, gives a warm and inviting feel. One of the temple’s highlights is the stunning chandeliers, including a breathtaking 15-foot tall piece adorned with 19,447 Swarovski crystals, sparkling brilliantly in the Celestial Room.
Inside, you’ll find four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and a baptistry, all designed to enhance the spiritual experience of every visitor. Interestingly, during the opening events on June 13, 2009, lightning struck the angel Moroni statue, singeing its trumpet, arm, and face. However, a replacement statue was lovingly installed just in time for the dedicatory services.
The Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple proudly stands as the thirteenth temple built in Utah and the fourth in the Salt Lake Valley. It shares its home with the South Jordan Utah Temple, both serving as beacons of hope and inspiration for the community.
