The Palmyra New York Temple is truly a special place, both for its beauty and its rich history! Located at 2720 Temple Rd in Palmyra, this wonderful temple is the 77th one to be dedicated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The story of the temple begins in February 1999 when it was announced, and just a few months later, in May 1999, Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley led a heartfelt groundbreaking ceremony. After a highly anticipated public open house from March 25 to April 1, 2000, the temple was dedicated on April 6, 2000. This date is especially meaningful, as it marks 170 years since the Church was organized in Fayette, New York!
Spanning five beautiful acres, the temple is covered in a stunning Bethel white granite that glimmers in the sunlight. One of its most prominent features is the single spire topped with a golden angel Moroni statue, giving it a truly majestic look. Inside, the 10,900 square feet of sacred space includes two instruction rooms and two sealing rooms, along with a lovely baptistry – perfect for all the cherished moments that take place there.
Located at an elevation of 578 feet, the temple sits just beyond the Sacred Grove, where Joseph Smith experienced his first vision in 1820 — a place filled with serenity and spirituality. It’s also situated on what was once the Smith Family Farm, with the temple standing proudly at the east end of this historic 100-acre property.
Another charming touch is the stained glass windows that feature etchings of the Sacred Grove, adding a unique and personal element to this spiritual haven. Plus, being the first temple built in New York and the 100th announced by the Church is a heartwarming milestone that showcases the growing community and commitment to providing places of Temple work and reflection for members inside. If you ever have the chance to visit, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss!
