Welcome to the Palmyra New York Temple! This beautiful temple, the 77th in operation, is a cherished place for many. Located at 2720 Temple Rd, Palmyra, New York, it sits on a lovely five-acre site.
The story of this special temple began on February 21, 1999, when it was officially announced. Just a few months later, on May 25, 1999, the ground was broken in a heartfelt ceremony led by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. After much anticipation, the temple opened its doors for a public open house from March 25 to April 1, 2000. And on April 6, 2000, it was beautifully dedicated—what’s really cool is that this date marks exactly 170 years since the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized in Fayette, New York!
When you visit, you’ll notice the temple’s stunning exterior, made from Bethel white granite, and topped with a single spire that proudly displays a gold-leafed angel Moroni statue. Inside, the temple offers sacred spaces like two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry, all designed to help create a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere.
Standing at 578 feet above sea level, the temple is situated on an elevated area just past the Sacred Grove, the very spot where Joseph Smith had that incredible vision of God the Father and Jesus Christ back in 1820. It’s the first temple ever built in New York and holds great significance as the 100th temple announced by the Church, which is an exciting achievement!
Be sure to check out the lovely stained glass windows, which feature beautiful etchings of the Sacred Grove, telling the story of faith and inspiration. Whether you’re looking to connect spiritually or simply enjoy the serene surroundings, the Palmyra New York Temple is truly a special place to visit.
