Palmyra New York Temple News

The Palmyra New York Temple is a truly special place with a rich history and beautiful design! Located at 2720 Temple Rd in Palmyra, this temple is the 77th temple dedicated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and it’s such a remarkable site to visit.

The journey to this beautiful temple began back on February 21, 1999, when it was officially announced. Fast forward to May 25, 1999, when the groundbreaking ceremony was led by the beloved Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley—what an exciting moment for the community! The public got a sneak peek during the open house held from March 25 to April 1, 2000, leading up to its grand dedication on April 6, 2000. Fun fact: that date is exactly 170 years after the Church was founded in Fayette, New York!

This lovely temple is built on five picturesque acres and boasts a stunning exterior made of Bethel white granite. Its striking spire, complete with a golden angel Moroni statue, can be seen from afar and adds a real touch of elegance to the area. Inside, it’s just as impressive, featuring 10,900 square feet of sacred space that includes two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry—perfect for those important ceremonies!

What’s truly special is its location. The temple sits on elevated ground just past the Sacred Grove, the very spot where Joseph Smith had his incredible vision in the spring of 1820. The temple is also built on the original Smith Family Farm, which spans 100 acres, with the temple nestled nicely at the east end of the property.

And don’t miss the beautiful stained glass windows inside, which have lovely etchings of the Sacred Grove that capture its divine essence. It’s the first temple built in New York and also marks the 100th temple announced by the Church, making it a significant and cherished landmark for so many. If you ever find yourself in the area, it’s definitely worth a visit!
