During the Sunday Afternoon Session of the October 2021 General Conference, Russell M. Nelson announced that the Provo Utah Temple would undergo demolition and reconstruction, starting after the dedication of the Orem Utah Temple. The existing temple will close on February 24, 2024, ending its ordinance work. Members are encouraged to use nearby temples during this transition.

The new Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will be built on Provo’s east bench at the mouth of Rock Canyon, offering a stunning backdrop of mountains. The grounds will feature a cascading water feature and a variety of plants, enhancing the natural beauty of the area. Its proximity to the Provo Missionary Training Center adds a spirit of dedication to the site.

The temple will cover about 163,000 square feet on 17 acres and will include six instruction rooms, ten sealing rooms, and two baptistries, designed to serve the needs of temple patrons. It will be renamed the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple on February 20, 2024, and the original temple will close and be demolished that same month. The new construction is expected to be completed by late 2027 and will blend traditional and contemporary architectural styles, featuring arched windows and a multi-level tower topped with a golden spire, but without the Angel Moroni statue.

The new temple will meet modern seismic codes and incorporate energy-efficient systems to promote sustainability. Its design will feature three prominent arches at the entrance and will align with contemporary building standards. The 17-acre grounds will include a mix of hardscaping and natural features, enhancing the overall aesthetic and flow of the temple complex.

Landscaping will focus on native, drought-tolerant plants that thrive in the local climate, supporting sustainability while creating an inviting atmosphere. The gardens will feature water elements and carefully curated vegetation to provide a peaceful retreat for visitors.

As it takes shape, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple aims to be a sanctuary that reflects its beautiful surroundings and serves as a significant spiritual landmark for its community. Its commitment to modern design and environmental stewardship will ensure it is a cherished place for many.
