Welcome to the exciting world of the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple! As the 196th dedicated temple, it’s a wonderful addition to the landscape and holds special meaning for so many. Located at 2093 Powell Road in Cranberry Township, this beautiful temple is ready to welcome visitors and members alike.
The journey to opening the temple started with a heartfelt announcement from our beloved Prophet Russell M. Nelson on April 5, 2020. Can you imagine the excitement at that moment? Fast forward to August 21, 2021, when Elder Randall K. Bennett led the groundbreaking ceremony. He inspired everyone by saying, “Please let today’s groundbreaking also be a day of emotional and spiritual building in our own lives and families.” What a beautiful reminder to focus on personal growth!
Mark your calendars because the temple will open its doors for a public open house from August 16th through August 31st, 2024! This will be a fantastic opportunity for everyone to explore its stunning spaces before its dedication on September 15, 2024, by the wonderful Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf.
Spanning 5.8 acres, this temple is truly a sight to behold! Its exterior is finished with gorgeous granite cladding from Portugal that gives it a special charm. The architectural design features a striking single attached spire, creating a unique silhouette that beautifully enhances the skyline.
Inside, there’s so much to discover! With a generous size of 32,240 square feet, you’ll find two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry designed with love. The interior is cozy and inviting, featuring soft green patterned carpeting trimmed in gold, along with stylish nylon rugs in the entry and waiting areas. Plus, the stunning Crema Ella marble from Turkey adds an elegant touch throughout.
One of the magical spots you won’t want to miss is the celestial room, adorned with a lovely organic leaf pattern—perfect for quiet reflection and peace. And let’s not forget the beautiful crystal chandeliers in the sealing and celestial rooms, which provide a warm, glowing ambiance with their frosted glass and brass accents.
Fun fact: this is the second temple built in Pennsylvania, serving about 100,000 Latter-day Saints in the Pittsburgh area. The rich history of this state is also incredible, as it’s the place where Prophet Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon and where John the Baptist appeared to him and Oliver Cowdery, restoring the Aaronic Priesthood. Just imagine the impact of those events!
The rendering of the temple was shared with everyone on January 19, 2021, and it gave a glimpse of the beautiful landmark that was to come. The Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple isn’t just a building; it’s a warm and welcoming spiritual hub for families, friends, and communities to come together in faith. With the opening date drawing closer, there’s a buzz of joy and anticipation in the air, and we can’t wait to share this incredible experience with everyone!
