The Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple is an exciting new addition to the community, marking the 196th dedicated temple! Located at 2093 Powell Road in Cranberry Township, this beautiful spiritual haven is sure to become a cherished place for many.
The journey to its construction began on April 5, 2020, with an announcement from Prophet Russell M. Nelson that sparked joy and anticipation among Latter-day Saints in the area. The groundbreaking event on August 21, 2021, led by Elder Randall K. Bennett, was filled with uplifting emotions as he encouraged everyone to think about building not just the temple, but also their own lives and families.
Looking ahead, there’s even more to be excited about! The temple will host a public open house from August 16th to August 31st, 2024. This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to come and experience the beauty of the temple before its dedication on September 15, 2024, by the beloved Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf.
The temple sits on a generous 5.8 acres and showcases a stunning exterior finished with granite cladding from Portugal. Its architectural design includes a unique single attached central spire, which makes it stand out beautifully in the landscape.
Inside, you’ll find a generous 32,240 square feet of sacred space with two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry, all designed to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The interiors feature comfortable green carpeting patterned with soft gold, along with lovely nylon rugs in the entry and waiting areas. Plus, the gorgeous Crema Ella marble from Turkey adds an elegant touch throughout the temple.
One of the highlights is the celestial room, which features a lovely organic leaf pattern, perfect for quiet reflection. The sealing room and celestial room are beautifully illuminated by crystal chandeliers with frosted glass, brass, and crystal accents, creating a serene and inviting ambiance.
It’s also worth noting that this temple is the second built in Pennsylvania, serving around 100,000 Latter-day Saints in the Pittsburgh area. Pennsylvania holds a special place in Latter-day Saint history, as it was where Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon and where John the Baptist restored the Aaronic Priesthood. It’s amazing to think about how these significant events unfolded not too far from the temple’s location!
The rendering of this gorgeous temple was shared with the public on January 19, 2021, and it has stirred quite a bit of excitement in the community. The Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple is more than just a building; it represents hope, faith, and togetherness for everyone involved. As the opening date approaches, there’s a wonderful sense of anticipation and warmth in the air, making it a moment to look forward to for many!
