Nestled at 2093 Powell Road, this stunning temple spans 5.8 acres, featuring a breathtaking exterior adorned with granite cladding sourced from Portugal.
The story of the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple begins with its announcement on April 5, 2020, made by the Prophet Russell M. Nelson. Fast forward to August 21, 2021, when the temple’s groundbreaking and site dedication took place, led by Elder Randall K. Bennett. In his heartfelt address, he urged everyone to see that day as an opportunity for emotional and spiritual growth within our families.
As an exciting addition to the community, the public open house is set to welcome visitors from August 16th to August 31st, 2024, leading up to the long-anticipated dedication on September 15, 2024, by Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf. With its impressive size of 32,240 square feet and a height reaching 125 feet, this temple is poised to serve approximately 100,000 Latter-day Saints in the Pittsburgh area.
Inside, you’ll find beautifully appointed spaces, including two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a serene baptistry. The interior boasts an elegant green carpet patterned with soft gold, complemented by luxurious Crema Ella marble from Turkey. The celestial room shines with an organic leaf pattern, and the sealing room and celestial room feature exquisite crystal chandeliers, illuminated with frosted glass and brass accents.
Interestingly, Pennsylvania is steeped in Latter-day Saint history—the Prophet Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon in Oakland Township, and in a nearby forest, John the Baptist appeared to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery, restoring the Aaronic Priesthood. This sacred moment culminated in their baptism in the Susquehanna River.
The temple’s design is further enhanced by a central spire, uniquely devoid of a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, showcasing its modern architectural style. The rendering of the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple was revealed to the public on January 19, 2021, generating anticipation and excitement for this spiritual haven.
