Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple Temple News

The Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple is a magnificent addition to the sacred landscape, proudly standing as the 196th dedicated temple in operation. Located at 2093 Powell Road in Cranberry Township, this stunning structure invites awe and reverence, nestled on a picturesque 5.8-acre site.

The journey to its creation began with an announcement on April 5, 2020, by Prophet Russell M. Nelson, sparking excitement and anticipation among the community. The groundbreaking and site dedication followed on August 21, 2021, led by Elder Randall K. Bennett, who inspired attendees, stating, “Please let today’s groundbreaking also be a day of emotional and spiritual building in our own lives and families.”

Fast forward to the future, and from August 16 to August 31, 2024, the temple will open its doors for a public open house—a chance for everyone to experience its beauty before its dedication on September 15, 2024, by Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf.

The architectural design is striking, featuring a central spire and a unique granite cladding sourced from Portugal. Inside, you’ll find a serene atmosphere with two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry, all within an impressive 32,240 square feet of thoughtfully designed space that reaches a height of 125 feet and is situated at an elevation of 1,076 feet.

The temple caters to the spiritual needs of around 100,000 Latter-day Saints in the Pittsburgh area, re-establishing a place of Temple work and community after the nearly 150 years since the last temple was built in Pennsylvania.

Rich in history, Pennsylvania holds a special place in the church’s narrative—it’s where Prophet Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon and where the Aaronic Priesthood was restored when John the Baptist appeared to Joseph and Oliver Cowdery in a nearby forest. It’s said that they baptized each other in the Susquehanna River—a profound moment tied to the very roots of the faith.

The Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple also boasts exquisite interior details. The floors are adorned with green patterned carpet accented with soft gold, while durable nylon rugs welcome visitors in the entry and waiting areas. The walls glisten with Crema Ella marble from Turkey, and the celestial room features an organic leaf pattern that evokes a sense of peace and tranquility. Both the sealing room and the celestial room are enhanced by stunning crystal chandeliers, with lighting designed to create a warm ambiance through frosted glass, brass, and crystal accents.

As the temple nears completion, it promises to be a beacon of hope and a center for spiritual growth and community connection in Pittsburgh—a true testament to the enduring legacy of faith in the region.
