The Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple stands as a remarkable addition to the landscape of Cranberry Township, marking its proud status as the 196th dedicated temple in operation. Nestled at 2093 Powell Road, this architectural marvel spans a generous 5.8 acres and encompasses an impressive 32,240 square feet.

Announced on April 5, 2020, by the Prophet Russell M. Nelson, the temple’s journey began with a heartfelt groundbreaking and site dedication on August 21, 2021, led by Elder Randall K. Bennett. He beautifully emphasized the day’s significance, saying, “Please let today’s groundbreaking also be a day of emotional and spiritual building in our own lives and families.”

Fast forward to the upcoming public open house from August 16 to August 31, 2024—a perfect opportunity for individuals and families to explore the beauty within. The temple will be officially dedicated on September 15, 2024, by the beloved Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf.

Notably, the temple’s exterior, featuring exquisite granite cladding sourced from Portugal, captivates with its elegant design. It boasts a unique architectural feature—a stunning single attached central spire, which intriguingly lacks the iconic gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue. Inside, visitors will find a warm and inviting atmosphere with lush green-patterned carpet complemented by soft gold, and striking Crema Ella marble from Turkey gracing its interior spaces.

The temple is equipped with two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry, catering to the spiritual needs of the 100,000 Latter-day Saints residing around Pittsburgh. The sealing room and celestial room are particularly enchanting, adorned with crystal chandeliers that sparkle under frosted glass, beautifully accented with brass and crystal.

Adding to the rich tapestry of history in Pennsylvania, it’s fascinating to note that the Prophet Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon in nearby Oakland Township, and the divine appearance of John the Baptist to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery in a local forest led to the restoration of the Aaronic Priesthood—a moment that changed lives and was commemorated by their baptism in the Susquehanna River.

The rendering of the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple was revealed to the public on January 19, 2021, and it has since become a symbol of hope and devotion in the community.
