Nestled in the scenic landscapes of Pocatello, Idaho, the Pocatello Idaho Temple stands as a magnificent testament to faith and community, being the 170th dedicated temple in operation. Located at 3100 Butte St, it has quickly become a beloved Temple.
The journey to this sacred space began on April 2, 2017, when the announcement of the temple was made, exciting locals and church members alike. Its groundbreaking and dedication on March 16, 2019, led by Elder Wilford W. Andersen, marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Pocatello community.
This stunning temple opened its doors to the public during a highly anticipated open house from September 18 to October 23, 2021, welcoming an incredible 250,721 visitors. The dedication ceremony on November 7, 2021, conducted by Apostle M. Russell Ballard, was a moment of reflection and blessing. Elder Ballard’s heartfelt prayer emphasized the temple’s significance, asking for divine love and guidance for all who would walk its grounds.
Spanning 10.94 acres, the temple’s striking exterior, crafted from white granite sourced from China, captures the eye. Its architectural feature—a beautifully designed central spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue—reflects the artistry and dedication involved in its creation. Inside, the temple encompasses 71,125 square feet of sacred space, featuring four instruction rooms, four sealing rooms, and a baptistry, all designed to facilitate Temple Work and reflection.
Standing majestically at 194 feet 6 inches tall and perched at an elevation of 4,989 feet, the temple can be spotted from the bustling Interstate 15 and Interstate 86. Surrounded by over 500 trees and thousands of vibrant flowers, the landscape was carefully curated with species such as Norwegian sunset maple and snow queen hydrangea, creating a serene environment that complements the divine spirit of the temple.
Reflecting its deep connection to the community, the chapel area boasts a stunning stained glass window depicting Jesus Christ holding a lamb, while a grand staircase adorned with travertine limestone welcomes all who enter. The temple, which is three stories high, beautifully intertwines modern architecture with artistic elements, including stained glass windows displaying the wildflowers of Idaho’s mountain desert, highlighting the state’s natural beauty.
Interestingly, the story of the Pocatello Idaho Temple has roots that trace back to the 1930s, when plans for the first temple were postponed due to water issues, making its eventual construction in 2017 a cherished realization for many.
