The announcement of the Portland Oregon Temple took place on April 7, 1984. Following almost two years of anticipation, the groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on September 30, 1986, led by the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. A public open house was held from June 15 to July 8, 1989, attracting an impressive 314,232 attendees. The dedication of the Temple itself spanned from August 19 to August 21, 1989, again officiated by Gordon B. Hinckley.
Architectural Features
Covering an area of 80,500 square feet, the Temple is built on a generous 7.3 acres. Its striking exterior features white Vermont marble walls complemented by a green Vermont slate roof. The design includes six attached spires and four domes, topped by a gold-leafed Angel Moroni, adding to the Temple’s grandeur.
