The journey to establish the Portland Oregon Temple began on April 7, 1984, when the announcement was made to the public. The groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on September 30, 1986, under the guidance of Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley.
The Temple opened its doors to the public for an open house that ran from June 15th through July 8, 1989, attracting an impressive 314,232 guests. The actual dedication took place over three days from August 19th to August 21st, 1989, again led by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley.

The exterior of the Portland Oregon Temple is adorned with white Vermont marble walls and topped with a green Vermont slate roof.
