The announcement for the Portland Oregon Temple was made on April 7, 1984, setting in motion a series of events that would lead to its completion. Groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on September 30, 1986, officiated by the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. After years of construction, the public open house ran from June 15 through July 8, 1989, and it attracted an impressive total of 314,232 attendees. The dedication of the Temple took place from August 19 to August 21, 1989, once again led by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley.
Architectural Features
Covering an area of 80,500 square feet, the Portland Oregon Temple is built on 7.3 acres and stands at a height of 181 feet. The exterior is elegantly finished with white Vermont marble walls, complemented by a green Vermont slate roof.
