The announcement for the Portland Oregon Temple was made on April 7, 1984. Following the announcement, the Temple’s groundbreaking and site dedication took place on September 30, 1986, led by the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. This marked the beginning of an important journey for this Temple.
Public interest in the Temple was immense, with an open house conducted from June 15 through July 8, 1989, attracting a total of 314,232 attendees. This event highlighted the community’s enthusiasm leading up to its dedication.
The dedication occurred over three days, from August 19 to August 21, 1989, again officiated by Gordon B. Hinckley.
Architectural Features
The Portland Oregon Temple is set on 7.3 acres and features an impressive architectural design with exterior walls made of white Vermont marble and a green Vermont slate roof. Notable architectural elements include six attached spires, four domes, and a striking gold-leafed Angel Moroni perched atop the Temple.
Interior Highlights
Within its 80,500 square feet, the Temple contains fourteen sealing rooms, a baptistry, and four instruction rooms. The celestial room is particularly noteworthy, featuring a grand two-story layout accented by three chandeliers, exquisite wall tapestries, and a magnificent grand staircase. The altars are crafted from white marble, adding to the elegance of the interior.
Grounds and Surroundings
Set at a height of 181 feet and an elevation of 235 feet, the Temple is a prominent feature that can be clearly viewed from I-5. The grounds are adorned with Douglas fir trees, enhancing the natural beauty of the area. A reflection pool is located on the east side, while an infinity pool graces the west side of the property.
