Discovering the Provo City Center Temple: A Journey Through History
In the heart of Provo, Utah, the Provo City Center Temple tells the story of the city’s origins, beginning in September 1849. Under the leadership of President Brigham Young and his counselors, a small caravan departed from Fort Utah to establish a new settlement. The aim included dedicating a central block for a chapel and schoolhouse, marked as “Public Square,” found today at Pioneer Park, located at Center Street and 500 West.
The Old Tabernacle: A Historic Milestone
The original building, known as “The Old Tabernacle,” was completed in 1861. Constructed from timber, adobe, and stone, it was dedicated by Brigham Young in 1867. Soon after, it became evident that the space was inadequate, leading to plans for a larger venue.
In 1883, work commenced on a new tabernacle under President John Taylor’s supervision. By 1885, the $100,000 facility was in use, even hosting the general conferences in 1886 and 1887. This building was dedicated in 1898 and was designed to accommodate 1,500 individuals.
Architectural Features and Cultural Significance
The tabernacle showcased remarkable architectural elements, including a brick exterior, octagonal towers at each corner, a high-pitched roof, and frosted-glass windows. Its interior featured exquisitely crafted woodwork, including a hand-carved rostrum. Over the years, renovations led to a rededication in September 1986.
This venue served as a gathering point for influential figures, including both Church and U.S. presidents, with the first visit by William H. Taft in 1909.
