Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple — an informative update
On October 3, 2021, President Russell M. Nelson announced a new temple for Provo, Utah. Initially referred to as the Provo Utah Temple, the project was later renamed the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple on February 20, 2024. The temple represents a major addition to the area’s religious architecture and is intended to serve local members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Site, address, and elevation
- The temple site is located at 2200 Temple Hill Dr, Provo, UT 84604.
- The project sits at an elevation of approximately 4,876 feet (1,486 meters) above sea level.
- The property totals 17 acres — slightly larger than the former site, which was 15 acres after a road at the old front of the temple was removed.
Design and size
- The exterior of the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will be finished in granite.
- It will feature a single, attached central spire; the design does not include a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue. The existing Angel Moroni that had been associated with the former temple is currently in storage.
- At approximately 163,000 square feet, this will be a large temple with a prominent vertical profile, rising to about 81 meters (265 feet 6 inches).
Site relationships and parking
- The temple will not share a parking lot with a meetinghouse. There is, however, a meetinghouse located off to the corner across the street, and a parking area for that meetinghouse sits across the street as well.
Timeline and public information
- A public rendering of the temple was released on November 24, 2021.
- Construction officially began on February 24, 2024.
- The Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple is expected to be completed in late 2027.
Context within the Church
- When the temple was announced in October 2021, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reported roughly 16.8 million members worldwide and approximately 500 congregations in the state of Utah.
- Once completed, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will be counted as the sixth temple in the state of Utah (as counted for this project).
What to watch for next
Interested readers can look for updates as construction progresses through 2024–2027: staging and site work, changes to the skyline as the central spire rises, landscaping plans, and any announced dates for open house or dedication events. The granite exterior and the substantial square footage make this a significant building project for Provo and for temple architecture in the region.
If you’re tracking developments, note the address (2200 Temple Hill Dr) and the expected late-2027 completion window for planning future visits or following official announcements from the Church.
