In his closing remarks during the October 2021 General Conference, Prophet Russell M. Nelson announced that the Provo Utah Temple would undergo demolition and reconstruction after the Orem Utah Temple’s dedication. The current temple will close on February 24, 2024, ending its ordinance work. Members are encouraged to use nearby temples during this transition and make appointments for their personal ordinances.
The new Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will be located on Provo’s east bench at the base of Rock Canyon, surrounded by beautiful mountains. The temple grounds will feature a cascading water feature and a variety of flowers, shrubs, and trees that highlight the area’s natural beauty. Nearby is the Provo Missionary Training Center, contributing a spirit of dedication to the community.
The new temple will cover about 163,000 square feet on a 17-acre site, including six instruction rooms, ten sealing rooms, and two baptistries, all designed to serve temple patrons comfortably.
Renamed to Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple on February 20, 2024, the original temple closed and was demolished shortly after. Reconstruction is underway, with completion expected in late 2027. The design will blend traditional and contemporary styles, featuring long arched windows and a striking multi-level tower with a golden spire, departing from the original mid-century modern look.
The new temple will comply with current seismic codes for safety and will incorporate energy-efficient systems, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability.
Distinctive features will include three grand white arches at the entrance. The exterior will be constructed to modern standards with waterproofing underway. Notably, the new temple will not have the Angel Moroni statue atop its spire, marking a design shift.
The extensive grounds will combine hardscaping with practical elements like concrete curbing and sidewalks, creating a visually appealing environment that harmonizes with the Rock Canyon backdrop.
The gardens will focus on native, drought-tolerant plants, promoting sustainable landscaping. The landscape will be designed for year-round interest, featuring various trees, shrubs, and seasonal flowers. Picturesque water features will enhance the serene ambiance.
The Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple aims to be a welcoming sanctuary, reflecting the beauty of its surroundings and the values of its visitors, with a focus on modern design, sustainability, and spiritual significance.
