On October 1, 2023, during the General Conference, Prophet Russell M. Nelson declared the Kahului Hawaii Temple. This will be the first facility of its kind in Maui, filling a long-standing need for the local members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Prior to this announcement, the only other temples in the state were the Laie Hawaii Temple, dedicated in 1919 on Oahu, and the Kona Hawaii Temple, which has been under major renovation since its original dedication in 2000.

Maui has a strong membership base, with nearly 75,000 individuals spread across 145 congregations, including more than 4,500 on the island itself.
