Exciting news for the faithful in Zimbabwe! The announcement for the Harare Zimbabwe Temple came during the announcementr 186th Annual General Conference on April 3, 2016, from none other than the beloved Prophet Thomas S. Monson. This was the beginning of a majestic journey that would lead to a place of Temple Work and community for many.
Fast forward to December 12, 2020, the groundbreaking ceremony hosted by Elder Edward Dube, a proud son of Zimbabwe and 1st Counselor in the African South Area Presidency, marked a significant milestone. His stirring words, “As we watch the rising of this building from the ground up, may we also turn our hearts upward to Thee and Thy Son, our Savior Jesus Christ,” encapsulated the spirit of hope and dedication that filled the air that day. The presence of President Mnangagwa, patrons praised the Church for its vital contributions to national development and the well-being of the citizenry, further highlighted the importance of this sacred Temple. At the groundbreaking ceremony was President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, was also in attendance. President Mnangagwa praised the Church in his remarks, saying, “The contribution of the Church to national development and social well being of the citizenry cannot be overemphasized.”
Mark your calendars! The Harare Zimbabwe Temple will have its Public Open House from January 22 to February 7, 2026, giving everyone a chance to explore this stunning new addition to their community. Located at 65 Enterprise Road, Highlands, Harare, this temple stands as a testament to faith — covering 6.7 acres with a grand architectural design. Rising to a height of 103 feet 4 inches, it features a single attached end spire, although it notably does not have a gold-leafed Angel Moroni. Inside, there are two Instruction Rooms, two Sealing Rooms, and one baptistry, totaling a spacious 17,247 square feet.
The temple’s artistic rendering was unveiled on October 1, 2020, and its construction was a welcomed development for many, especially given the long journey of 13 hours that faithful members had to undertake to reach the Johannesburg South African Temple. The arrival of the Harare Zimbabwe Temple, the first in the beautiful country of Zimbabwe and the eighth in Africa, marks a tremendous step forward for the local community, which includes a vibrant membership of 26,000 with six stakes and two districts.
A remarkable moment occurred on April 17, 2018, when Prophet Russell M. Nelson graced the temple site with his visit during a tour, inspiring even more excitement about this sacred space.
