Nestled in the heart of Houston, the Houston Texas Temple stands as a magnificent testament to faith, dedication, and community spirit. Officially announced on September 30, 1997, this beautiful temple has since transformed into a beloved spiritual landmark for countless individuals and families.
The journey to the temple’s completion began with a groundbreaking ceremony on June 13, 1998, led by Lynn A. Mickelsen. This pivotal moment marked the start of an inspiring chapter for many local faithful, fueling anticipation and excitement for what was to come.
Following nearly two years of dedication and hard work, the doors of the Houston Texas Temple were thrown open to the public during an inviting open house from August 5 to 22, 2000. This period was filled with joy and expectation, culminating in a sacred dedication ceremony held over the weekend of August 26-27, 2000, officiated by the late Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. This momentous event united members from across the region, who gathered in celebration of a significant new space for spiritual growth and connection.
Covering 11 acres, the temple boasts stunning architectural features that truly captivate the eye. One of its most striking elements is the single attached end spire topped with a gold-leafed angel Moroni, symbolizing the Church’s mission to share the gospel. With an elegant exterior finished in Luna Pearl Granite, the temple reaches an impressive height of 159 feet, making it a prominent feature against the Houston skyline. Inside, visitors can find two instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and a baptistry, all within a spacious 33,970 square feet designed for peaceful worship and reflection.
In April 2018, the temple was rededicated by M. Russell Ballard, further solidifying its spiritual significance for the Houston community. Serving twenty-eight stakes, the temple has profoundly impacted the lives of many members, especially those who previously faced an arduous five-hour journey to reach the nearest temple in Dallas.
One particularly memorable moment during the groundbreaking ceremony came when Elder Christofferson spoke about humility and personal reflection. He posed a poignant question to attendees: “What will make each of us more holy as we enter the temple doors?” This profound inquiry resonates deeply with many who strive to deepen their spirituality.
Accompanying Elder Christofferson at the ceremony was Don Hand, a key figure in the temple’s history. Facing immense financial strain in the mid-1980s, Mr. Hand found solace in prayer and made a promise to the Lord, ultimately avoiding bankruptcy. Years later, when he learned of the Church’s plans to build a temple, he felt a rekindling of his commitment.
Mr. Hand’s journey began with a vision for the area, having originally acquired 2,000 acres and dreaming of its future potential. Although the property seemed unobtainable when President Hinckley visited, ongoing discussions about its intended use ultimately opened Mr. Hand’s heart to the idea of selling the land for the temple. This decision not only fulfilled his promise to the Lord but also forever transformed the landscape of Houston.
