The Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple stands as a beautiful beacon of faith and spirituality, proudly functioning as the 196th dedicated temple within the Church. Nestled in the serene surroundings at 2093 Powell Road, Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, this sacred space serves a growing community of over 100,000 Latter-day Saints in the Pittsburgh area.
The journey to this momentous establishment began on April 5, 2020, when the Prophet Russell M. Nelson announced its construction, igniting excitement and anticipation. Fast forward to August 21, 2021, when Elder Randall K. Bennett led the groundbreaking ceremony, encouraging all present to focus on personal and familial growth, saying, “Please let today’s groundbreaking also be a day of emotional and spiritual building in our own lives and families.”
After years of dedication, the temple’s public open house was held from August 16 to August 31, 2024, allowing the community to explore its serene beauty before the official dedication. On September 15, 2024, Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf dedicated the temple, marking a significant milestone for the region.
Spanning an impressive 32,240 square feet and set on 5.8 acres, the temple boasts a stunning exterior of granite cladding from Portugal. Its unique architectural design features a single attached central spire, notably without a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue. Inside, visitors are welcomed by lush green carpeting accented with soft gold, with nylon rugs adorning the entry and waiting areas. The interiors are dressed in exquisite Crema Ella marble from Turkey, while the celestial room showcases an organic leaf pattern, creating a calming atmosphere for reflection and Temple work.
The sealing and celestial rooms of the temple are illuminated by dazzling crystal chandeliers that incorporate brass and crystal accents, making for an elegant divine ambiance. Moreover, the rich history of Pennsylvania adds depth to the temple’s significance. This very state was where the Prophet Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon in Oakland Township and where he and Oliver Cowdery were visited by John the Baptist, restoring the Aaronic Priesthood in a nearby forest — an event that continues to inspire many.
