Nestled in the heart of Provo, Utah, at 50 South University Ave, the Provo City Center Temple has become a beloved addition to the local skyline and an integral part of the community’s spiritual life. This is the 150th dedicated Temple in operation, further solidifying the emphasis placed on these edifices by the Church.
A Journey Through Time
The story of the Provo City Center Temple is as captivating as its design. Originally serving as a tabernacle, the building faced a devastating accidental fire in 2010. However, what could have marked the end instead paved the way for renewal. In his address during the Semiannual General Conference on October 1, 2011, Prophet Thomas S. Monson spoke of the importance of such facilities, emphasizing that no Church-built facility holds a greater significance than a Temple, where timeless relationships are formed and sealed.
The groundbreaking took place on May 12, 2012, officiated by Apostle Jeffrey R. Holland, marking the beginning of an extensive renovation effort. The public open house that spanned from January 15 to March 5 in 2016 drew over 800,000 individuals eager to explore the Temple’s exquisite interior before its dedication.
On March 20, 2016, the Provo City Center Temple was officially dedicated by Prophet Dallin H. Oaks. During this significant event, Oaks acknowledged the profound educational and spiritual initiatives in the area, highlighting the contributions of Brigham Young University, Utah Valley University, and the Missionary Training Center.
Architectural Marvel
The architectural design of the Provo City Center Temple is nothing short of breathtaking. Standing at 150 feet tall, the exterior showcases beautiful red brick complemented by a stunning central spire. Four corner spires frame the entrance, crowning the structure with a magnificent, 13-foot Angel Moroni statue that was placed atop the Temple for the first time on March 31, 2014.
Covering a total area of 85,084 square feet on 5.6 acres, the Temple features four levels, including two above ground and two below. The lower levels house the baptistry, dressing rooms, offices, and a bridal room, while the upper levels include endowment rooms, sealing rooms, and spacious lobbies.
Practical Amenities
Designed with thoughtfulness, the Provo City Center Temple offers practical amenities, including a basement parking garage with 245 spots, ensuring convenient access for those attending events or ceremonies. There are an additional 50 parking spots on the main level for ease of access.
Moreover, the architectural design integrates beautifully with its surroundings. Across the street, a Victorian pavilion features a basement that connects to both the pavilion and the basement of the Temple, adding an extra layer of accessibility and charm to the area.
