Discovering the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple
Nestled in the picturesque setting of Saratoga Springs, Utah, the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple stands as the 179th dedicated Temple in operation. Its address is 987 South Ensign Drive, Saratoga Springs, Utah 84045. Announced on April 2, 2017, during General Conference by Prophet Thomas S. Monson, this Temple has become a significant part of the area’s history and development.
The groundbreaking and site dedication for the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple took place on October 19, 2018, led by Craig C. Christensen. During the ceremony, he highlighted the Temple’s future impact on individuals and families, noting its role in providing spiritual safety and opportunities for sacred covenants. After years of preparation, the public open house occurred from April 15 to July 8, 2023, spanning a total of 84 days. The Temple was then dedicated by Apostle Henry B. Eyring on August 13, 2023.
Covering an impressive 22.71 acres, the Temple features a beige precast concrete exterior that measures eight inches thick. Its spire is crafted from glass fiber reinforced concrete, supported by a strong steel framework with concrete shear walls and floor slabs. A decorative band encircles the exterior, depicting a mountain motif alongside representations of Utah Lake wetlands and snowy egrets, the latter serving as a logo for Saratoga Springs City.
Inside, art glass stained windows capture the essence of the Arts and Crafts movement, featuring colors and designs inspired by the natural beauty surrounding Utah Lake and the Wasatch Mountains, incorporating purples, blues, greens, and golds. The Temple’s location on a bluff overlooks Utah Lake and the Wasatch Front, showcasing a sustainable landscape designed with native plant species. The plaza area facing east offers stunning views of the valley and is surrounded by evergreens and mountain shrubs.
Architecturally, the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple boasts a single, attached central spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue. The layout includes four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and one baptistry, encompassing 87,836 square feet with a height of 199 feet 9 inches, situated at an elevation of 4,652 feet.
This Temple marks the eighteenth built in Utah and the fifth in Utah County, joining the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple, Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple, Payson Utah Temple, and Provo City Center Temple. Saratoga Springs itself is a newer community, incorporated in 1997 and located on the west side of Utah Lake in Northern Utah County. The Temple was released to the public on September 5, 2019.
The interior flooring features a blend of carpet, area rugs, porcelain tile, ceramic tile, glass tile, and stone, with carpet patterns uniquely carved on-site. The restroom floors showcase “rug-like” tile patterns, while the baptistry’s font is adorned with TREND Mosaic Brillante glass tiles in shades of blue, white, cream, and purple.
The design incorporates stylized flowers that represent various local wildflowers, such as the iris, daisy, and chrysanthemum. In the baptistry and other areas, stylized lines evoke the water patterns of the Wasatch Mountain Range and Utah Lake. The art glass in the baptistry embodies snowy egrets in wetlands, complementing the artistic theme established by the city logo. Flowing wave and water patterns represent Utah Lake, while stylized gold shapes depict silhouettes of birds and mountains.
Decorative elements enhance the overall aesthetic, including a Schonbek light fixture in the brides room and antique brass railings in the baptistry, created from sapele African mahogany and glass. The millwork, doors, and standard wood throughout the Temple are crafted from Sapele African Mahogany, featuring designs that incorporate art glass.
The ceilings predominantly consist of painted gypsum, with stepped ceilings enhancing the architectural elegance. Custom ceiling medallions adorned with floral and foliage details add to the grandeur of the space. Throughout, notable artwork, such as “Evening Flight” by Adair Payne and “Timpanogos from Across the Lake” by Bruce Brainard, contributes to the Temple’s inspiring ambiance.
