Discovering the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple
Nestled on a bluff overlooking the picturesque Utah Lake and the majestic Wasatch Front, the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple stands as the 179th dedicated Temple in operation. This remarkable building, located at 987 South Ensign Drive, Saratoga Springs, Utah 84045, complements its surroundings, both in beauty and design.
The vision for the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple was announced by Prophet Thomas S. Monson during General Conference on April 2, 2017. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on October 19, 2018, led by Craig C. Christensen, who eloquently expressed how this facility would bless families and individuals. His words highlighted the importance of creating a place for sacred covenants and the nurturing of future generations.
The public open house for the Temple took place from April 15, 2023, through July 8, 2023, allowing many to appreciate its striking design and spiritual significance. The Temple was dedicated by Apostle Henry B. Eyring on August 13, 2023.
Encompassing 22.71 acres, the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple features a distinctive exterior made of beige precast concrete panels. These panels are eight inches thick, providing both strength and elegance. The exterior is adorned with a mountain design and representations of Utah Lake wetlands and snowy egrets, reflecting the city’s logo. The spire is crafted from glass fiber reinforced concrete and is topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, a hallmark of such facilities.
Inside, the Temple spans an impressive 87,836 square feet and reaches a height of 199 feet 9 inches, sitting at an elevation of 4,652 feet. It includes four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and one baptistry.
The flooring is a stunning blend of carpet, area rugs, porcelain tile, ceramic tile, glass tile, and stone, featuring intricate patterns that were carved on-site. Notably, the restroom floors showcase “rug-like” patterns made from tiles of various sizes and shapes. The baptistry’s interior features a font adorned with TREND Mosaic Brillante glass tiles in a beautiful array of colors, including blues, whites, creams, and purples.
Design elements throughout the building celebrate the natural beauty of the region. Stylized flowers, representative of local wildflowers such as irises, daisies, and chrysanthemums, can be found throughout the interior. Water themes flow through the artwork, with stylized lines depicting waves, connecting to the nearby water bodies.
Art glass stained windows draw inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement and reflect the serene colors of Utah Lake and the Wasatch Mountains in shades of purples, blues, greens, and golds. The main level, particularly at the baptistry, showcases beautiful depictions of snowy egrets and wetlands, echoing the city’s logo and the natural landscape.
The millwork, largely crafted from Sapele African Mahogany, features Art Deco style and is complemented by bespoke door hardware that reflects the architectural detailing found in the Temple. This includes grass and wetland designs as well as water motifs that correlate with the art glass.
Noteworthy artwork throughout the interior includes pieces such as “Evening Flight” by Adair Payne and “Timpanogos from Across the Lake” by Bruce Brainard, capturing the essence of the local landscape and enriching the spiritual atmosphere of the Temple.
As the eighteenth Temple built in Utah and the fifth in Utah County, the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple not only represents architectural beauty but also echoes the rich history and contemporary growth of Saratoga Springs, a relatively new community incorporated in 1997.
