Nestled in the heart of St. George, the St. George Utah Temple stands as a remarkable piece of history and architecture. Its rich narrative stretches back to the early days of the church’s establishment in Utah.
A Brief History
The St. George Utah Temple was announced on January 31, 1871. Groundbreaking took place on November 9, 1871, under the guidance of Brigham Young, the Second Prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This marks the first Temple constructed in Utah Territory, an event that defined an era of spiritual growth.
Construction Challenges
Building the Temple was no small feat. The site was initially swampy but contained volcanic rock, which was blasted using a cannon to prepare the grounds. In fact, some of this rock is now displayed at the visitor center. The entire building process took place on 6.5 acres of land.
Architectural Features
The exterior finish of the Temple features native redstone sandstone quarried north of the city and plastered in white, presenting a stunning contrast. Additional features include precast concrete and steel, contributing to its durability. Standing at a height of 175 feet and an elevation of 2,678 feet, the St. George Utah Temple encompasses 143,969 square feet. Its single attached end tower adds to its unique architectural appeal.

The Temple was dedicated on January 1, 1877, in a series of three dedicatory prayers. Notable figures, including Wilford Woodruff, Erastus Snow, and Brigham Young, Jr., participated in this sacred event. Baptisms for the dead commenced shortly after, with the first occurring on January 9, 1877, and endowments beginning soon after, even while construction continued in other areas.
Renovation and Upkeep
A year post-dedication, the original tower succumbed to a lightning storm, causing substantial damage. By 1883, a new, more majestic tower had been completed, enhancing the Temple’s skyline.

One intriguing aspect of the Temple’s history involves the Founding Fathers of the United States. They appeared twice to Wilford Woodruff, inquiring why their sacred work had not yet been executed. This extraordinary moment was immortalized in a painting that adorned the Temple lobby for decades.

In November 1928, the Temple experienced a fire that destroyed the annex built in 1883. Thankfully, all records and furnishings within were preserved, ensuring the legacy of the Temple continued.
