Discovering the Rexburg Idaho Temple

The Rexburg Idaho Temple is a notable addition to the eastern Idaho skyline, serving as the 125th dedicated Temple in operation. Located at 750 S 2nd E, Rexburg, Idaho, this striking five-story edifice stands proudly adjacent to the Brigham Young University–Idaho campus. The Temple is a prominent feature visible from miles away along the Highway 20 corridor, offering an impressive sight to all who pass by.

Historical Milestones

The journey of the Rexburg Idaho Temple began on December 12, 2003, when it was announced to the public by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. The groundbreaking and site dedication followed on July 30, 2005, led by John H. Groberg, with an impressive turnout of 8,000 attendees.

A significant public open house occurred from January 7 to January 26, 2008, attracting 200,000 attendees eager to explore the Temple’s interior. Initial plans for the dedication, set for February 3, 2008, were delayed due to the passing of President Gordon B. Hinckley. One week later, President Thomas S. Monson dedicated the Temple with a heartfelt prayer, reflecting on its importance and the experiences of those who have visited.

Architectural Features

Situated on 10 acres of land, the Rexburg Idaho Temple stands at a remarkable height of 168.9 feet and covers 57,504 square feet. It utilizes 637 precast panels crafted from a distinctive white quartz finish called China White, mined in Washington state. These exterior panels, along with a waterproofing compound, ensure the Temple maintains its radiant appearance even in rainy conditions.

The Temple features striking architectural elements, including a single attached end spire crowned by a Gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue. Inside, four instruction rooms, five sealing rooms, and a baptistry cater to various needs during visits.

Art and Craftsmanship

The art glass throughout the Temple, primarily featuring a wheat motif designed by Utah artist Tom Holdman, symbolizes the region’s rich agricultural heritage. The interior murals, painted by local artist Leon Parson, celebrate the area’s wildlife and landscapes. The materials used for furnishings are of exceptional quality, including quarter-sawn sapele wood for the interior doors and durable African wood for the exterior doors.

Brass and crystal shine in the interior light fixtures, while the baptismal font railings combine bronze and aluminum for an elegant touch.

Community Engagement and Legacy

As the first Temple built in Rexburg, Madison County, and the state of Idaho, the Rexburg Idaho Temple holds special significance in the region. The announcement of the Temple coincided with the transition of Ricks College to a four-year institution, Brigham Young University–Idaho, marking a new era in local education.

The community response during the open house was overwhelming, with many volunteers contributing their time and talents. Over 10,000 volunteers, including numerous BYU–Idaho students, facilitated tours, served refreshments, and ensured visitors had a memorable experience.

Conclusion

The Rexburg Idaho Temple represents not just a place of service, but also a testament to the rich history and vibrant culture of the area. With its striking design, beautiful art, and profound dedication, the Temple continues to be an important part of the Rexburg landscape and a cherished location for many.
