The St. Louis Missouri Temple is a significant religious site located at 12555 N Outer Forty Dr, St. Louis, Missouri 63141. As the 50th dedicated Temple in operation, it holds a special place in the hearts of many.
Historical Milestones
The journey of the St. Louis Missouri Temple began with its public announcement on October 29, 1990, by the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. Just a few years later, on October 30, 1993, the groundbreaking and site dedication took place, also led by Prophet Hinckley. This momentous occasion drew an impressive attendance of 5,000 individuals.
The public open house from April 26 to May 24, 1997, welcomed an astounding 260,000 attendees. This event allowed many to explore the Temple before its dedication. Finally, the St. Louis Missouri Temple was dedicated from June 1 to June 5, 1997, again officiated by Prophet Hinckley.
Architectural Features
The St. Louis Missouri Temple spans 58,749 square feet and is three stories tall, reaching a height of 150 feet. It is meticulously constructed on 14 acres. The exterior features a combination of cast stone and Bethel white granite, finished with a thermal touch. One of the most striking features is the single attached end spire that proudly displays a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue.
Within the Temple, you will find four instruction rooms, four sealing rooms, and one baptistry, designed to serve various needs.
First of Its Kind in Missouri
This Temple holds distinction as the first built in the city of St. Louis, the first in St. Louis County, and the first in the state of Missouri. Notably, while the Temple was constructed in the late 1990s, sites for temples were dedicated as early as the 1830s in places like Independence, Far West, and Adam-ondi-Ahman.

A notable excerpt from the dedicatory prayer of the St. Louis Missouri Temple encapsulates its significance: “We are reminded that this temple stands on the soil of the state of Missouri, where the Prophet and his associates suffered so much and were finally banished by a cruel and illegal order of extermination. Terrible were their losses, terrible their suffering. We are grateful that the extermination order has been revoked and the persecution is long since gone. Today Thy Church basks in the sunlight of good will. Hundreds of thousands of visitors have come to view this, Thy holy house. They have left with respect and appreciation.”
