The St. George Utah Temple was announced on January 31, 1871, marking the beginning of a significant endeavor. The groundbreaking and site dedication took place on November 9, 1871, led by Prophet Brigham Young, the second Prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This Temple holds the distinction of being the first built in the Utah Territory and was the only one completed during Brigham Young’s 30-year tenure as Prophet.
The Construction Journey
Building the Temple was no small feat. The site was initially swampy but was transformed through the hard work of many. Volunteers skillfully compacted volcanic rock using a cannon, showcasing their dedication. The exterior is adorned with native red sandstone, quarried north of the city and finished with white plaster. Additional features include precast concrete and steel elements.

Spanning an impressive 143,969 square feet and standing tall at 175 feet, the St. George Utah Temple sits at an elevation of 2,678 feet. The design incorporates a single attached end tower, three instruction rooms, multiple sealing rooms, and one baptistry.

The dedication of the Temple occurred on January 1, 1877, through a series of three dedicatory prayers. Prominent leaders such as Wilford Woodruff, Erastus Snow, and Brigham Young, Jr. played significant roles in this sacred event. Shortly thereafter, baptisms for the dead began on January 9, 1877, followed by the commencement of endowments on January 11, 1877, all while construction was still in progress in various areas.
The Challenges Faced
The Temple’s journey has not been without its challenges. Just a year after the dedication, the original tower succumbed to a lightning storm, sustaining significant damage. However, a new and more impressive tower was completed in 1883, enhancing the Temple’s grandeur.
