Groundbreaking and Site Dedication

The groundbreaking and site dedication for the Smithfield Utah Temple took place on June 18, 2022. Apostle Quentin L. Cook, who presided over the event, expressed his admiration for the beauty of the valley, stating, “I have seen much of the world, but this peaceful valley surrounded by these majestic mountains always feels like home to me. It is among the most beautiful places on earth.” Apostle Gary E. Stevenson also participated in the dedication, along with various general leaders.

Architectural Features

Design and Structure

The Smithfield Temple is built on 13.3 acres and showcases a three-story design. Its architecture features two attached end towers and an arched, colonnaded design complete with tall domed cupolas. Although there is no gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, the structure still captures the essence of its intended purposes.

Inside, the Smithfield Utah Temple encompasses 81,000 square feet and contains significant rooms including four instruction rooms, four sealing rooms, and two baptistries.

Ground Features

The grounds have been strategically designed to face south, maximizing winter sun exposure to aid in melting snow, enhancing the aesthetics and accessibility throughout the year.

Significance in Cache Valley

The Smithfield Utah Temple holds particular significance as the first Temple built in Smithfield and the second in Cache Valley. With a dedication that included a heartfelt prayer from Apostle Quentin L. Cook, he expressed gratitude for those who laid the foundations for this Temple. He also mentioned, “We pray that this Temple will be a beacon light for the communities it serves.”

Growth and Development

At the time of the Temple’s announcement, Utah was home to approximately 2.1 million Church members, which accounted for about two-thirds of the total state population of 3.3 million. The Smithfield Utah Temple stands as the twenty-sixth Temple established in Utah, reflecting the growing needs and desires of its members.
