Nestled in the picturesque foothills of Bountiful, Utah, the Bountiful Utah Temple stands as the 47th dedicated Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With its stunning Bethel white granite exterior and iconic central spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, this impressive edifice draws attention and admiration from all who pass by.
A Brief History
The story of the Bountiful Utah Temple began on February 2, 1990, when its construction was first announced to the public. Fast forward to May 2, 1992, when the groundbreaking and site dedication took place, led by Prophet Ezra Taft Benson. This remarkable event drew approximately 7,500 attendees, with an additional 2,500 participating remotely.
The anticipation continued to build leading up to the public open house, held from November 4 to December 17, 1994. During this time, an astounding 870,361 people toured the Temple, supported by the dedicated efforts of 45,000 volunteers.
The dedication ceremony occurred from January 8 to January 14, 1995, led by Prophet Howard W. Hunter. Notably, this was one of only two Temples he dedicated during his brief tenure. The Bountiful Utah Temple’s dedication spanned 28 sessions, with 201,655 individuals in attendance.
Architectural Highlights
Occupying nine acres and reaching a height of 176 feet, the Bountiful Utah Temple is a striking presence on the horizon. Its substantial 104,000 square feet provide ample space for various facilities, including four instruction rooms, eight sealing rooms, and a single baptistry. Visitors can access a two-story parking garage with ease from the west side of the grounds.

The design of the Bountiful Utah Temple is reminiscent of the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple, though each site presents its unique backdrop and experience. Interestingly, on May 22, 2016, the Angel Moroni statue was struck by lightning but was swiftly replaced on June 1 of the same year. Originally intended for the Meridian Idaho Temple, this restored statue now proudly crowns the Bountiful Utah Temple.
