Early Beginnings
The St. George Utah Temple was announced on January 31, 1871, marking a new chapter in the spiritual life of early Utah settlers. Ground was broken on November 9, 1871, when Brigham Young, the Second Prophet of the Church, dedicated the site.
Construction Challenges
Building on swampy ground presented unique challenges, but determination prevailed. Workers utilized volcanic rock, even employing a cannon for this purpose, which can be seen displayed at the accompanying visitor center. The construction site spanned 6.5 acres, and the exterior features native redstone sandstone quarried north of the city.
Dedication and Early Use
The dedication of the St. George Utah Temple took place on January 1, 1877, through a series of three prayers by prominent Church leaders. Notably, baptisms for the dead commenced shortly after on January 9, followed by the beginning of endowments on January 11, 1877. Interestingly, the original presentation of the endowment was given live.

The St. George Utah Temple encompasses an impressive 143,969 square feet and reaches a height of 175 feet, sitting at an elevation of 2,678 feet. Its distinguished exterior is complemented by a single attached end tower, which was rebuilt in 1883 after the original was damaged by a lightning storm.

Within its walls, the Temple contains three instruction rooms, several sealing rooms, and a baptistry, serving various functions for its attendees.
Artistic Significance
A remarkable event in the Temple’s history involved the Founding Fathers of the United States appearing to Wilford Woodruff, inquiring why their temple work had not been performed. This extraordinary occurrence is captured in the painting “That We May Be Redeemed” by Harold I. Hopkinson, which hung for decades in the Temple lobby.

Open Houses

In a tragic turn, a fire in November 1928 consumed the annex built in 1883. Fortunately, all records and furnishings were saved, allowing for the Temple’s historical integrity to be maintained.
