Exploring the Rexburg Idaho Temple
The Rexburg Idaho Temple stands as a remarkable achievement in architectural design and community significance. Located at 750 S 2nd E, Rexburg, Idaho 83440, it serves as the 125th dedicated Temple in operation, marking a milestone in the expansion of sacred spaces across the country.
Overview of the Rexburg Idaho Temple
The Temple, situated adjacent to the Brigham Young University–Idaho campus, rises elegantly above its hillside setting. With its five-story height and 57,504 square feet of space, it dominates the skyline, creating a distinct presence visible from the Highway 20 corridor. The design incorporates 637 precast panels made from a unique white quartz finish known as China White, which ensures the exterior remains radiant thanks to a waterproofing compound that washes off dust during rainfall.
The architectural features of the Rexburg Idaho Temple are complemented by a striking end spire crowned with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, symbolizing the rich traditions associated with the Temple.
Construction and Dedication History
The journey to the completion of the Rexburg Idaho Temple began when it was announced publicly on December 12, 2003, by the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. This was followed by a significant groundbreaking and site dedication on July 30, 2005, officiated by John H. Groberg, where an impressive 8,000 people gathered to witness the event.
The public open house, held from January 7 to January 26, 2008, attracted an astonishing 200,000 attendees, far surpassing early estimates of 150,000 visitors. This extraordinary turnout demonstrated the strong connection people felt toward the Temple, leading to increased tour group sizes and additional tour times.
Interiors and Artistic Features
Inside, the Rexburg Idaho Temple features exquisite artistic elements. A wheat motif, created by Utah artist Tom Holdman, can be found throughout the 700 art-glass windowpanes, serving to acknowledge the agricultural heritage of the surrounding area. Additionally, the prominent murals inside the Temple were painted by Rexburg native Leon Parson, who received the Eliza R. Snow Award in 2010. His artwork beautifully reflects the wildlife and landscapes of the Upper Snake River Valley.
The Interior is accentuated with high-quality materials, including quarter-sawn sapele wood for the doors and brass and crystal for the light fixtures, contributing to a refined ambiance throughout the building.
