Temple Construction Status and Photographs Provo Utah Rock Temple

During the Sunday Afternoon Session of the October 2021 General Conference, Prophet Russell M. Nelson announced the Provo Utah Temple’s upcoming transformation. The existing temple will be closed on Saturday, February 24, 2024, to make way for a new Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple, which will be constructed after the Orem Utah Temple is dedicated. Members are encouraged to use nearby temples during the closure and make appointments for personal ordinances.

The new temple will be located on Provo’s east bench, at the mouth of Rock Canyon, with a stunning backdrop of mountains. It will include an expansive 17-acre site featuring a cascading water feature and diverse landscaping. The temple will have about 163,000 square feet, six instruction rooms, ten sealing rooms, and two baptistries.

The temple will be officially renamed on February 20, 2024, and the original structure will be demolished shortly after its closure. Reconstruction will begin with a projected completion date in late 2027. The new design will incorporate traditional and contemporary elements, showcasing elegant arched windows and a prominent tower topped with a golden spire. Unlike the original, the new design will not include the Angel Moroni statue.

Safety and sustainability will be priorities in the new construction, meeting current seismic codes and incorporating energy-efficient systems. The exterior will feature three grand white arches at the entrance, while the grounds will blend hardscaping with natural elements to enhance the area’s beauty.

Landscaping will focus on native, drought-tolerant plants and include picturesque water features, creating a serene atmosphere. The temple aims to be a sanctuary that reflects the community’s values and offers a peaceful space for worship and reflection.
