In his closing remarks during the Sunday Afternoon Session of the October 2021 General Conference, the late Prophet Russell M. Nelson announced that the Provo Utah Temple will undergo demolition and reconstruction after the Orem Utah Temple is dedicated. The existing temple will close on Saturday, February 24, 2024, ending its ordinance work. Members in the temple district are encouraged to use nearby temples during this time and make appointments for personal ordinances.
The temple will be renamed the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple and will be located on Provo’s east bench, at the mouth of Rock Canyon, offering stunning mountain views. Its grounds will feature a cascading water feature and a variety of plants that highlight the region’s natural beauty. Nearby, the Provo Missionary Training Center (MTC) adds to the area’s spirit of dedication.
Covering about 163,000 square feet on 17 acres, the new temple will include six instruction rooms, ten sealing rooms, and two baptistries, designed to meet the needs of temple patrons. The renaming to the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will take place on February 20, 2024, just before the original temple closes and is demolished.
The new temple’s construction is expected to be completed by late 2027. Its design will blend traditional and contemporary styles, featuring elegant arched windows and a multi-level tower topped with a golden spire, moving away from the original mid-century modern design.
The building will adhere to the latest seismic codes and use energy-efficient systems. A key architectural feature is the three grand white arches at the main entrance, designed to be warm and welcoming. The construction materials will meet modern standards, with waterproofing currently being applied.
The expansive grounds will blend practical hardscaping with an oval-shaped feature and will be landscaped with native, drought-tolerant plants, supporting sustainable practices. This will create an inviting atmosphere with diverse flora throughout the year. Additionally, picturesque water features will enhance the peaceful environment, making the temple a serene retreat.
As the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple takes shape, it will serve as a sanctuary that reflects its surroundings and the values of the community, emphasizing modern design, sustainability, and spiritual significance.
