The story of the Manti Utah Temple begins with its groundbreaking and site dedication, which took place on April 25, 1877, led by the esteemed Prophet Brigham Young. Over the years, this Temple has seen various renovations, resulting in multiple public dedications. The most recent open house occurred from March 14 to April 5, 2024, showcasing the beautiful enhancements made to this cherished location.
Architectural Marvel
Covering an expansive 27 acres, the Manti Utah Temple boasts an impressive exterior finish of fine-textured cream-colored oolite limestone, quarried directly from the site itself. Rising majestically to a height of 179 feet, and perched on a gentle knoll referred to as “Temple Hill,” it commands a stunning view of the Sanpete Valley. Its twin self-supporting, open-centered spiral staircases are architectural wonders, winding five stories up each of the octagonal towers. Crafted with such skill that no joints are visible in the walnut handrailings, these staircases stand as a lasting legacy of the pioneer Latter-day Saint craftsmanship.
Interestingly, this Temple notably does not feature a sign displaying its name, allowing its exquisite design and craftsmanship to speak for themselves.
A Look Inside
Inside, the Manti Utah Temple spans 74,792 square feet, housing four instruction rooms, nine sealing rooms, and one baptistry. Visitors can appreciate beautiful painted murals adorning the Creation Room, Garden Room, World Room, and the Celestial Room, each contributing to the serene atmosphere. While the Terrestrial Room does not have murals, the elegance of the space is undeniably captivating.
A fascinating historical detail is the arching tunnel that once ran under the east tower, facilitating car passage from one side to the other. Although it is currently closed, the impressive arch can still be seen when entering the Temple through the sealing rooms.
A Journey Through Time
With its original name as the Manti Temple, this cherished site has witnessed its share of events throughout history. One dramatic episode occurred in 1928 when a lightning strike ignited the east tower, prompting a three-hour battle against the flames.
For 133 years, the Manti Utah Temple featured live endowment presentations that concluded after renovations on October 2, 2021. Despite these changes, the Temple remains a significant part of the spiritual landscape.
The dedication of this remarkable place has occurred multiple times due to remodels, with the latest happening on April 21, 2024, under the direction of Prophet Russell M. Nelson.
