Announced on October 3, 2019, its rich legacy dates back to November 28, 1921, when it was dedicated by Heber J. Grant. The groundbreaking occurred on April 25, 1922, leading to its formal dedication over the course of several days from October 23 to 26, 1927, also officiated by Heber J. Grant.
This temple has continually evolved over the decades, undergoing significant renovations to enhance its functionality and worship experience. In early 1974, it closed for comprehensive remodeling, which included equipping the Creation, Garden, and World Rooms for single-room film presentations of the endowment. The preservation and restoration of valuable burlap murals during this process ensured that the temple’s history would be honored for future generations. This renovation not only expanded its capacity but also added vital dressing rooms and sealing rooms, allowing more patrons to participate in sacred ordinances.
The most recent major renovation began on May 19, 2018, and successfully concluded in 2021, reestablishing the temple’s standing as a vital spiritual hub. This extensive renovation improved mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems while respecting the building’s historical character. The enhancements to the exterior, including the preservation of iconic murals and the careful replacement of windows, further solidified the temple’s historic appeal. The landscape improvements on the grounds facilitated the hosting of public events, enriching community engagement.
The Mesa Arizona Temple was rededicated on April 15 and 16, 1975, by Spencer W. Kimball, standing as a testament to its enduring significance. Following its first open house prior to a rededication, held from October 16 to November 20, 2021, it received another rededication on December 12, 2021, conducted by Dallin H. Oaks.
Architecturally, this temple makes a striking statement with its flat roof and sculpted friezes. Inside, it features four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and one baptistery, covering an impressive 75,000 square feet. At 53 feet tall and situated at an elevation of 1,240 feet, it commands attention on its expansive 20-acre site. Constructed with a concrete exterior reinforced by 130 tons of steel and elegantly finished with glazed, egg-shell colored terra cotta tiles, the temple is both a visual and spiritual landmark.
Additionally, the Mesa Arizona Temple holds a number of significant distinctions. It was the first temple built in Arizona and the first to present the endowment in a language other than English. Initially named the Arizona Temple, it has become an essential part of the community, anchoring a historic district that retains its residential character. Complementing the temple, a visitors’ center and beautifully landscaped grounds, including a cactus garden and large reflection pools, enhance the overall experience.
The temple attracts large crowds during its high-profile annual events. Each Easter, it proudly hosts the outdoor pageant “Jesus the Christ,” recognized as the largest of its kind in the world. During the Christmas season, the grounds come alive as they are transformed into an exquisite Nativity display illuminated by hundreds of thousands of lights, consistently drawing numerous visitors.
