Temple Now

In a vibrant announcement during the Sunday Afternoon Session of the October 2021 General Conference, the late Prophet Russell M. Nelson shared exhilarating news about the Provo Utah Temple’s future. This beloved temple will be transformed through demolition and reconstruction, set to commence after the dedication of the Orem Utah Temple. Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 24, 2024, as this date signifies the closing of the existing temple, which will end its ordinance work and usher in an exciting new chapter. During this transition, members in the temple district are encouraged to visit nearby temples and continue participating in sacred ordinances by making appointments for their personal needs.

The new Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will grace a stunning location on Provo’s east bench, right at the mouth of the breathtaking Rock Canyon. With awe-inspiring mountain backdrops, the temple will invite serenity and reverence. Its expansive grounds will feature a dazzling cascading water feature surrounded by a colorful array of flowers, shrubs, and trees that showcase the region’s natural splendor. Just across the street, the Provo Missionary Training Center buzzes with the energy of young missionaries preparing to serve around the world, adding a spirit of purpose to the area.

Spanning approximately 163,000 square feet on a generous 17-acre site, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will house six instruction rooms, ten sealing rooms, and two baptistries—all designed to create a warm, welcoming environment for temple patrons. With a nod to its geographical significance, the temple will be officially renamed on February 20, 2024, before the original structure closes on February 24, 2024, and is brought down to make way for the new building. Anticipated to be completed by late 2027, the new temple will blend traditional elegance with contemporary touches, featuring long, graceful arched windows and a striking multi-level tower topped by a radiant spire.

Built with safety and sustainability in mind, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will adhere to current seismic codes and include energy-efficient systems for electrical, heating, and plumbing needs. The entrance will be marked by three grand white arches that exude warmth and generosity, inviting all who approach. A notable shift in design will be the absence of the iconic Angel Moroni statue atop the spire, giving the new temple a fresh identity.

The beautifully landscaped 17-acre grounds will harmoniously combine hardscaping with natural elements, featuring walking paths and an elegant oval-shaped centerpiece at key intersections, enhancing both functionality and beauty. Landscaping efforts will focus on native, drought-tolerant plants, showcasing a commitment to sustainability while ensuring vibrant scenery year-round. Expect an array of trees, shrubs, and seasonal flowers that will create a captivating atmosphere.

To further elevate the experience, picturesque water features will be integrated into the designs, surrounded by lush greenery that thrives in moisture-rich areas, providing serene escapes for visitors. The temple grounds will boast manicured gardens and symmetrical walkways, expertly balancing structured design with organic beauty to enhance the spiritual journey of everyone who enters.

As the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple comes to life, it promises to be more than just a place of worship; it will become a welcoming retreat that reflects the stunning landscape and the values of those who come to visit. With its commitment to modern design, environmental stewardship, and spiritual significance, this new temple is set to become a cherished landmark and a source of peace for many.
