Discovering the Manti Utah Temple: A Historical Gem in Central Utah
Nestled on “Temple Hill” in Manti, Utah, the Manti Utah Temple stands as a testament to dedication and architectural ingenuity. This majestic building, the third of its kind dedicated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, boasts a rich history dating back to its announcement on June 25, 1875.
A Historic Beginning
Groundbreaking for the Manti Utah Temple took place on April 25, 1877, led by the Prophet Brigham Young. Since its inception, the Temple has undergone several renovations, each time renewing the spirit and beauty of this significant site. The most recent renovation culminated in a public open house from March 14 to April 5, 2024, with a dedication ceremony held on April 21, 2024, by Prophet Russell M. Nelson.
Architectural Features
Covering an impressive 27 acres, the Manti Utah Temple is constructed of fine textured cream-colored oolite limestone, quarried from the very ground upon which it stands. With a total area of 74,792 square feet and a height of 179 feet, this building commands attention and admiration. Unique to this Temple are its two attached towers, which incorporate twin self-supporting, open-centered spiral staircases that ascend five stories. The craftsmanship of the walnut handrails is remarkable, featuring seamless joints—a true engineering marvel of the pioneering Latter-day Saints.
A Closer Look Inside
Inside, the Temple features four instruction rooms, nine sealing rooms, and one baptistry, facilitating a range of religious ceremonies. The rooms showcase beautiful painted murals in key areas such as the Creation Room, Garden Room, World Room, and the Terrestrial Room. Notably, the Celestial Room is currently free of murals, allowing for a serene environment.
An intriguing feature is a large arching tunnel that used to run beneath the east tower, providing a passage for vehicles. While this tunnel has since been closed, the arch remains visible, capturing the imagination of those who explore its halls.
Historical Tidbits
The Manti Utah Temple has weathered its share of challenges. In 1928, a lightning strike ignited the east tower, resulting in a dramatic blaze that lasted three hours. Over the years, the Temple has seen many changes, including the discontinuation of live endowment presentations after 133 years, which came to a close following a renovation on October 2, 2021.

Positioned just off Highway 89, the Manti Utah Temple is highly visible as it overlooks the Sanpete Valley from its elevated perch. Interestingly, the Temple does not display a sign bearing its name, adding an air of mystery for those who might stumble upon it.
