Celebrating the First Temple in Montana: The Billings Montana Temple
Nestled in the scenic city of Billings, Montana, the Billings Montana Temple holds a special place in the hearts of Latter-day Saints in the region. As the first temple built in the Treasure State, it stands as a symbol of faith, dedication, and service for members in Montana and beyond.
A Rich History and Impressive Foundations
The journey toward dedicating the Billings Montana Temple began with its announcement on August 30, 1996. Recognizing the need for a sacred house of worship in Montana, Church leaders announced plans for the temple, which would serve thousands of members across the state.
The groundbreaking and site dedication took place two years later, on March 30, 1998. Elder Hugh W. Pinnock officiated the event, marking the starting point of construction on this historic building. Situated on a 10-acre site at 3100 Rim Point Drive, the temple’s location offers both spiritual significance and majestic views of the surrounding landscape.
Architectural Beauty and Design
The Billings Montana Temple spans approximately 30,800 square feet and features a striking architectural style. Its exterior is finished with Wyoming white dolomite precast concrete, giving it an elegant and durable appearance. The temple’s most distinctive feature is a single central spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue, symbolizing the angel’s message of the Restoration.
Inside, the temple is equipped with two instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and one baptistry. These facilities enable members to participate in sacred ordinances and eternal covenants. The temple was constructed at an elevation of 3,444 feet, enhancing its visibility and prominence within the community.
Public Open House and Dedication
The community was invited to tour the temple during its public open house from October 8th through the 23rd, 1999. Thousands of visitors had the opportunity to see the beauty and craftsmanship of the structure before its dedication.
On November 20th and 21st of 1999, the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the Billings Montana Temple, transforming it into a sacred sanctuary dedicated to the service of the Lord. Since then, it has been the 66th temple in operation within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving members in Montana, Wyoming, and northern South Dakota.
A Garden of Beauty
An integral part of the temple grounds is the beautiful landscaping that complements the sacred space. The grounds feature approximately 250 trees and over 4,500 shrubs, creating a peaceful and inviting environment for reflection and worship.
