Celebrating the Birmingham Alabama Temple — A Beacon of Faith and Beauty
Nestled in Gardendale, Alabama, the Birmingham Alabama Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stands as a remarkable symbol of faith, dedication, and community. As the first temple in the beautiful state of Alabama, it serves thousands of members and visitors alike, embodying both spiritual significance and architectural elegance.
A Historic Beginning
The journey of this sacred edifice began with its announcement on September 11, 1998. Over a year later, the groundbreaking and site dedication took place on October 9, 1999, with Stephen A. West officiating. This marked the start of a project that would become a spiritual landmark for many.
Grand Opening and Dedication
In August 2000, the temple opened its doors to the public with a week-long open house from August 19th through the 26th. During this time, an impressive 21,134 visitors toured the beautiful grounds, getting a glimpse of the temple’s sacred interiors and stunning architecture. Just a few weeks later, the temple was dedicated by the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley on September 3, 2000, officially beginning its service as the 98th dedicated temple in operation.
Architectural Beauty and Design
Built on a 5.6-acre lot at an elevation of 661 feet, the Birmingham Alabama Temple boasts stunning architectural features. The exterior is finished with imperial Danby white marble quarried from Vermont, giving it a luminous and refined appearance. A single attached spire crowns the structure, topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, an iconic symbol of the LDS Church.
Inside, the temple spans approximately 10,700 square feet and includes two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry, supporting the spiritual needs of its patrons.
A Community and Cultural Landmark
The temple’s grounds are just as impressive as its architecture, earning a beautification award from the city of Gardendale for their exquisite landscaping. During winter, a nativity scene is displayed at the temple, adding to its festive and welcoming atmosphere.
