Discovering the Draper Utah Temple

Nestled in the picturesque hills of Draper, Utah, the Draper Utah Temple stands as a remarkable addition to the beautiful landscape of the area. Located at 14065 Canyon Vista Ln, Draper, Utah 84020, this impressive building is not only a place of significance for many but also a stunning architectural feat that draws attention for its design and aesthetics.

A Historical Overview

The announcement of the Draper Utah Temple came on October 2, 2004, and it was a moment of great anticipation for many. The groundbreaking and site dedication took place on August 5, 2006, officiated by the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, who acknowledged the devotion of the faithful by stating, “It is a great tribute to our people. They are so faithful in temple attendance and it is for this reason that we construct this beautiful house of the Lord.”

Architectural Features

Covering an impressive 58,300 square feet, the Draper Utah Temple features a single attached central spire topped with the iconic gold-leafed Angel Moroni, installed on July 8, 2008. This temple is notable for its exterior finish of white granite sourced from China and limestone from France, perfectly complementing its elegant design. The 166 feet tall structure is built at an elevation of 5,136 feet, offering a stunning view of the surrounding landscape.

The beautiful interiors incorporate Makore wood from Africa, adding warmth and elegance to the design. Visitors will find a total of 221 exterior windows and 50 interior windows, complemented by 432 door panels made of 35,420 hand-cut pieces of glass featuring a Log Cabin quilt pattern inspired by early pioneers.

Interior Layout

Inside, the Draper Utah Temple houses four instruction rooms, five sealing rooms, and a baptistry. The largest sealing room can accommodate 80 patrons. Each instruction room features hand-painted panoramic scenes of mountain landscapes, including the breathtaking view of Draper’s Corner Canyon and the Salt Lake Valley. The baptistry is thoughtfully positioned on the downhill western side of the building, allowing natural light to flood the space through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Opening and Dedication

After much anticipation, the public open house occurred from January 15 to March 14, 2009, drawing 684,721 guests eager to explore the new addition. The official dedication took place from March 20 to 22, 2009, conducted by Prophet Thomas S. Monson, marking a significant moment in the history of the Draper area.

Floral Elegance

A prominent theme throughout the Draper Utah Temple design is the sego lily, the state flower of Utah. This element enhances the connection to the local heritage and adds a layer of beauty and culture to the space.

Accessibility

With a parking lot that accommodates 492 vehicles, accessibility is a key advantage for those wishing to appreciate this stunning edifice.

The Draper Utah Temple is the twelfth temple built in Utah and the third in the Salt Lake Valley, resonating deeply with the spiritual aspirations of many in the region. Its graceful architecture and thoughtful design elements truly make it a sight worth seeing in the heart of Draper. Whether you’re an architecture enthusiast, a local resident, or someone interested in the history and culture of the area, the Draper Utah Temple serves as a captivating destination.
