In an uplifting announcement during the closing remarks of the October 2021 General Conference, the late Prophet Russell M. Nelson shared exciting news about a major transformation for the Provo Utah Temple. Set to start after the dedication of the Orem Utah Temple, the current temple will close on Saturday, February 24, 2024, as preparations begin for a brand-new facility. During this transition, members in the temple district are invited to explore nearby temples, ensuring they can continue participating in sacred ordinances.
Introducing the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple, this stunning new edifice will grace the east bench of Provo, right at the mouth of the breathtaking Rock Canyon. With majestic mountain vistas as a backdrop, the temple’s grounds will feature a striking cascading water feature, surrounded by a beautiful array of flowers, shrubs, and trees that celebrate the local landscape. Just across the road lies the Provo Missionary Training Center, infusing the area with a spirit of dedication and purpose.
Spanning approximately 163,000 square feet over 17 acres, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will embrace a thoughtfully designed space with six instruction rooms, ten sealing rooms, and two baptistries. On February 20, 2024, the temple will be officially renamed, and the original structure will close and be demolished shortly after on February 24. The new construction is set to be completed by late 2027, showcasing a seamless blend of traditional elegance and contemporary design with its long, graceful arched windows and a prominent multi-level tower soaring to a sparkling spire.
This modern masterpiece will not only adhere to the latest seismic safety codes—but also feature energy-efficient systems throughout to reflect a commitment to sustainability. Unlike its predecessor, the new temple will not feature the Angel Moroni statue, signaling a fresh direction in design.
