Temples of the Church of Jesus Christ

The Mesa Arizona Temple stands as a remarkable beacon of faith, embodying a rich heritage that began with its announcement on October 3, 2019. The temple’s site was graciously dedicated on November 28, 1921, by Heber J. Grant, following a significant groundbreaking ceremony on April 25, 1922. Over the years, the temple has celebrated various milestones, including its official dedication from October 23 to 26, 1927, also officiated by Heber J. Grant.

Throughout its evolving history, the Mesa Arizona Temple has joyfully welcomed visitors for an open house from March 19 to April 3, 1975, and celebrated its rededication on April 15-16, 1975, under the inspiring leadership of Spencer W. Kimball. In more recent times, the temple opened its doors to the public during an open house from October 16 to November 20, 2021, culminating in a heartfelt rededication on December 12, 2021, led by Dallin H. Oaks.

Architecturally, the Mesa Arizona Temple features a flat roof adorned with beautifully sculpted friezes. It houses four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and a baptistery within a generous footprint of 75,000 square feet, standing tall at a height of 53 feet, positioned at an elevation of 1,240 feet. Set on 20 meticulously landscaped acres, the exterior combines concrete reinforced with 130 tons of steel, gracefully faced with glazed, eggshell-colored terra cotta tiles.

Nestled just east of the historic Mesa Townsite, settled by pioneers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the temple anchors a district that has retained its welcoming character. The meticulously maintained grounds include a public visitors’ center, a cactus garden, and expansive reflection pools. Each Easter season, the community comes together to witness “Jesus the Christ,” celebrated as the largest annual outdoor Easter pageant in the world. During Christmas, the grounds transform into a breathtaking Nativity display, illuminated by hundreds of thousands of festive lights.

The Mesa Arizona Temple holds pioneering significance, being the first temple established in Arizona and the first to present the endowment in a language other than English. Originally known as the Arizona Temple, it is cherished for its tradition of delivering the endowment through live acting.

The temple’s intricate friezes depict the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy regarding the gathering of the Lord’s people in the last days. A significant renovation in February 1974 aimed at modernizing the temple, enhancing its facilities for single-room film presentations of the endowment, and elevating the overall visitor experience.

The most recent renovation, which commenced on May 19, 2018, introduced vital upgrades to infrastructure and interior design while preserving the temple’s historical character. These enhancements not only better accommodate cherished annual events but also elevate the beauty of the surrounding landscapes, ensuring the Mesa Arizona Temple remains an inspirational landmark for generations to come.
