The Mesa Arizona Temple stands as a significant landmark with a remarkable history. Originally announced on October 3, 2019, its roots date back to earlier years, with its site being dedicated on November 28, 1921, by Heber J. Grant. The groundbreaking took place on April 25, 1922, marking the beginning of a journey that would culminate in the temple’s dedication from October 23 to 26, 1927, also presided over by Heber J. Grant.

Through the years, the temple has undergone various enhancements, including an open house from March 19 to April 3, 1975, followed by a rededication on April 15-16, 1975, led by Spencer W. Kimball. Most recently, the temple opened its doors for the public once again from October 16 to November 20, 2021, and was subsequently rededicated on December 12, 2021, by Dallin H. Oaks.

Architecturally, the Mesa Arizona Temple is distinguished by its flat roof and intricately sculpted friezes. The temple houses four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and one baptistery, all within a space of 75,000 square feet. The structure rises to a height of 53 feet and is situated at an elevation of 1,240 feet, all on a 20-acre lot. Its exterior is composed of concrete reinforced with 130 tons of steel, adorned with glazed, eggshell-colored terra cotta tiles.

Located just east of the original Mesa Townsite, settled by pioneers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the temple anchors a historic district that proudly maintains its residential character. The beautifully landscaped grounds feature a public visitors’ center, a cactus garden, and large reflection pools, creating a serene environment. Each year, during the Easter season, the temple grounds come alive with “Jesus the Christ,” recognized as the largest annual outdoor Easter pageant in the world, while at Christmas, the area transforms into a breathtaking Nativity display illuminated by hundreds of thousands of festive lights.

The Mesa Arizona Temple has achieved several historic milestones, being the first temple built in Arizona and the first to present the endowment in a language other than English. Originally designated as the Arizona Temple, it gained recognition for its unique presentation of the endowment through live acting.

The temple is characterized by carved friezes that illustrate the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy regarding the gathering of the Lord’s people in the last days. Significant renovations took place in February 1974, equipping the temple with modern amenities, including areas dedicated to single-room film presentations of the endowment. Subsequent improvements allowed for the addition of space and new ordinance rooms, greatly enhancing visitor experience.

The most recent renovation, which commenced on May 19, 2018, encompassed critical upgrades to the infrastructure, interiors, and grounds, all while preserving the temple’s historical character. These enhancements ensure that the Mesa Arizona Temple continues to serve its community effectively and remains a cherished destination for visitors year-round.
