The Mesa Arizona Temple stands as a remarkable testament to faith and community, originating with its announcement on October 3, 2019. The dedication of the temple site on November 28, 1921, by Heber J. Grant marked the beginning of a journey, with groundbreaking taking place on April 25, 1922. This journey continued with the temple’s dedication from October 23 to 26, 1927, under the same inspiring leadership of Heber J. Grant.

Over the years, the Mesa Arizona Temple has been a beacon of hope and faith, welcoming visitors during a memorable open house from March 19 to April 3, 1975, and celebrating its rededication on April 15-16, 1975, led by Spencer W. Kimball. The doors opened once more to the public during an open house from October 16 to November 20, 2021, culminating in a heartfelt rededication on December 12, 2021, by Dallin H. Oaks.

In its architectural grace, the Mesa Arizona Temple features a flat roof adorned with beautifully sculpted friezes. With four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and a baptistery within a spacious 75,000 square feet, it rises to a height of 53 feet at an elevation of 1,240 feet. Set on 20 acres of thoughtfully cultivated land, its exterior of concrete and 130 tons of steel is elegantly clad in glazed, eggshell-colored terra cotta tiles.

Nestled just east of the original Mesa Townsite, settled by pioneers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the temple anchors a historic district that retains its residential charm. Its meticulously maintained grounds include a public visitors’ center, a cactus garden, and serene reflection pools, where the community gathers annually for “Jesus the Christ,” the world’s largest outdoor Easter pageant. During Christmas, the grounds glow with a stunning Nativity display and hundreds of thousands of sparkling lights.

The Mesa Arizona Temple is a pioneer in many respects: it was the first temple built in Arizona and the first to present the endowment in a language other than English. Originally named the Arizona Temple, its tradition of live acting in the endowment ceremony adds to its legacy.

The intricate friezes on the temple capture the profound promise of Isaiah’s prophecy about gathering the Lord’s people in the last days. A significant renovation in February 1974 modernized the facility, enhancing it for single-room film presentations of the endowment and creating a more enriching experience for all.

Beginning on May 19, 2018, the latest renovation introduced vital upgrades while preserving the temple’s historical beauty. These improvements better accommodate heartfelt gatherings and enhance the enchanting landscape, ensuring that the Mesa Arizona Temple continues to inspire all who visit for generations to come.
