The Mesa Arizona Temple stands as a magnificent embodiment of faith and heritage, beginning its journey with the announcement on October 3, 2019. The sacred site was dedicated on November 28, 1921, by Heber J. Grant, following a momentous groundbreaking on April 25, 1922. The temple achieved a significant milestone when it was officially dedicated from October 23 to 26, 1927, also by Heber J. Grant.
Throughout its evolving history, the Mesa Arizona Temple has consistently extended its welcoming arms, holding an open house from March 19 to April 3, 1975, and celebrating its rededication on April 15-16, 1975, under the inspiring leadership of Spencer W. Kimball. The recent open house from October 16 to November 20, 2021, marked another blessed moment, culminating in a rededication on December 12, 2021, led by Dallin H. Oaks.
Architecturally, the Mesa Arizona Temple captures the imagination with its flat roof and beautifully sculpted friezes. It boasts four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and a baptistery within an expansive 75,000 square feet and stands proudly at 53 feet tall, elevated at 1,240 feet. Spanning 20 acres, the temple’s exterior of concrete reinforced with 130 tons of steel is adorned with elegant, glazed eggshell-colored terra cotta tiles.
Nestled just east of the original Mesa Townsite, the temple anchors a historic district rich in the legacy of pioneers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who settled the area. The meticulously manicured grounds include a public visitors’ center, a cactus garden, and serene reflection pools. Every Easter season, the community gathers to experience “Jesus the Christ,” the largest annual outdoor Easter pageant in the world. At Christmas, the grounds are transformed into an awe-inspiring Nativity display, illuminated by hundreds of thousands of twinkling lights.
The Mesa Arizona Temple holds several remarkable distinctions: it was the first temple built in Arizona and the first to present the endowment in a language other than English. Originally named the Arizona Temple, it is celebrated for its pioneering tradition of delivering the endowment through live acting.
The intricate friezes grace the temple with visions of Isaiah’s prophecy, depicting the gathering of the Lord’s people in the last days. A significant renovation in February 1974 enhanced the temple’s facilities for a modern world, transforming spaces for single-room film presentations of the endowment and elevating the overall experience for all who visit.
The most recent renovation, which commenced on May 19, 2018, introduced essential upgrades while preserving the historic character of this cherished landmark. Significant improvements were made to the grounds, creating an oasis of beauty that continues to inspire and uplift all who visit the Mesa Arizona Temple.
