The Latest Temple News from the Church of Jesus Christ Mesa Arizona Temple

The Mesa Arizona Temple stands as a significant beacon of faith and heritage, with its journey beginning with the announcement on October 3, 2019. The site was dedicated on November 28, 1921, by Heber J. Grant, following the groundbreaking ceremony on April 25, 1922. This sacred space has seen remarkable milestones, including its official dedication from October 23 to 26, 1927, also led by Heber J. Grant.

Over the years, the Mesa Arizona Temple has welcomed visitors for an open house from March 19 to April 3, 1975, and celebrated its rededication on April 15-16, 1975, under the guidance of Spencer W. Kimball. More recently, the temple opened its doors to the public during an open house from October 16 to November 20, 2021, culminating in a rededication on December 12, 2021, by Dallin H. Oaks.

Architecturally, the Mesa Arizona Temple features a flat roof with beautifully sculpted friezes. The facility encompasses four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and a baptistery within a spacious 75,000 square feet, gracefully standing 53 feet tall at an elevation of 1,240 feet. Set on 20 beautifully landscaped acres, the exterior showcases concrete reinforced with 130 tons of steel, adorned with glazed, eggshell-colored terra cotta tiles.

Nestled just east of the original Mesa Townsite, historically significant as a settlement by pioneers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the temple anchors a historic district that has beautifully maintained its residential charm. The meticulously kept grounds, featuring a public visitors’ center, a cactus garden, and expansive reflection pools, invite contemplation and serenity. Each Easter season, the community gathers to witness “Jesus the Christ,” the largest annual outdoor Easter pageant in the world. During Christmas, the grounds transform into a stunning Nativity display, illuminated by hundreds of thousands of twinkling lights.

The Mesa Arizona Temple is distinguished by several remarkable achievements: it was the first temple in Arizona and the first to present the endowment in a language other than English. Originally named the Arizona Temple, it reflects a tradition of delivering the endowment through live acting, inspiring countless individuals.

The temple’s intricate friezes depict the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy regarding the gathering of the Lord’s people in the last days. A significant renovation in February 1974 marked a turning point, modernizing the temple and enhancing its facilities for single-room film presentations of the endowment, thus enriching the visitor experience.

The most recent renovation, initiated on May 19, 2018, introduced vital upgrades to infrastructure and interior design while preserving the temple’s historical legacy. These improvements not only enhance the beauty of the surrounding landscapes but also ensure that the Mesa Arizona Temple remains a cherished landmark of inspiration and faith for generations to come.
