The Mesa Arizona Temple represents a significant landmark of faith and heritage, with its history officially commencing with the announcement made on October 3, 2019. The site was dedicated on November 28, 1921, by Heber J. Grant, following a groundbreaking ceremony that took place on April 25, 1922. The temple has achieved various milestones throughout its history, including its official dedication from October 23 to 26, 1927, once again officiated by Heber J. Grant.

Over the years, the Mesa Arizona Temple has provided opportunities for public engagement, including an open house held from March 19 to April 3, 1975, and a rededication on April 15-16, 1975, conducted by Spencer W. Kimball. More recently, the temple welcomed visitors during an open house from October 16 to November 20, 2021, culminating in a rededication on December 12, 2021, led by Dallin H. Oaks.

In terms of architectural design, the Mesa Arizona Temple features a flat roof complemented by sculpted friezes. The facility includes four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and a baptistery, all within a total area of 75,000 square feet, standing at 53 feet tall and situated at an elevation of 1,240 feet. The temple is located on 20 well-maintained acres, featuring an exterior constructed of concrete reinforced with 130 tons of steel, elegantly faced with glazed, eggshell-colored terra cotta tiles.

Strategically positioned just east of the original Mesa Townsite—historically significant as a settlement by pioneers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—the temple anchors a historic district that has effectively preserved its residential character. The meticulously maintained grounds include a public visitors’ center, a cactus garden, and expansive reflection pools that invite contemplation and peaceful reflection. Each Easter season, the community gathers to experience “Jesus the Christ,” recognized as the largest annual outdoor Easter pageant worldwide. During the Christmas season, the grounds are transformed into a captivating Nativity display, enhanced by hundreds of thousands of festive lights.

The Mesa Arizona Temple is noteworthy for several pioneering accomplishments: it was the first temple constructed in Arizona and the first to present the endowment in a language other than English. Initially named the Arizona Temple, it is distinguished by its tradition of delivering the endowment through live acting.

The temple’s intricate friezes illustrate the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy regarding the gathering of the Lord’s people in the last days. A significant renovation initiated in February 1974 modernized the temple, adapting its facilities for single-room film presentations of the endowment and enhancing the overall visitor experience.

The latest renovation, which commenced on May 19, 2018, involved essential upgrades to infrastructure and interior design while maintaining the historical integrity of the building. These improvements not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the surrounding landscapes but also ensure that the Mesa Arizona Temple remains a revered symbol of faith and inspiration for future generations.
