Nestled in the heart of Provo, Utah, the Provo City Center Temple stands as the 150th dedicated sacred space in operation, offering a unique blend of history, architectural beauty, and spiritual significance. Located at 50 South University Ave, this remarkable building has a fascinating story that begins well before its dedication.
A Historic Transformation
Originally known as the Provo Tabernacle, this site has seen a transformation rooted in resilience. In December 2010, an accidental fire consumed the tabernacle, leading to its significant renovation. The renovation transformed it into today’s beautiful Provo City Center Temple, which was officially announced by Prophet Thomas S. Monson during the Semiannual General Conference on October 1, 2011. This monumental moment underscored the importance of such spaces, as he remarked, “no Church-built facility is more important than a temple.”
Groundbreaking and Dedication
The ceremonial groundbreaking occurred on May 12, 2012, led by Apostle Jeffrey R. Holland, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the building’s life. After several years of anticipation, the public was invited to tour the interior of the Temple during an open house held from January 15 to March 5, 2016. Over 800,000 individuals participated, gaining a firsthand look at its intricate design and features.
The official dedication was conducted by Prophet Dallin H. Oaks on March 20, 2016. In his dedicatory prayer, Oaks expressed gratitude for the various educational institutions and programs in the area, highlighting the sacred space’s role in the broader context of the community.
Architectural Elegance
Spanning an impressive 85,084 square feet and standing at a height of 150 feet, the Provo City Center Temple is designed with captivating architectural features. The exterior is adorned with red brick and prominently displays a central spire, flanked by four corner spires. Atop this elegant design rests the gold-leafed statue of the Angel Moroni, standing 13 feet tall—a significant symbol in this faith tradition, placed on March 31, 2014.
Inside, the Temple comprises four levels—two above ground and two below—with intricate rooms designed for specific purposes. The lower levels house the baptistry, dressing rooms, and bridal room, while the upper levels feature endowment rooms, sealing rooms, lobbies, and offices. There are also three instruction rooms to facilitate various spiritual activities.

Located in Provo’s business district, the Provo City Center Temple benefits from its central position. A striking Victorian pavilion across from the Temple connects to its basement, which offers additional accessibility features. Parking is also convenient, with a basement garage accommodating 245 vehicles and an additional 50 spots at the ground level.
